Advocacy Corner: Microfiber Update

One of the core reasons CLA exists is to advocate on behalf of the laundromat industry. Here’s an update on the latest challenges facing our industry — and how we’re working to address them.

CLA’s advocacy efforts continue in response to model microfiber filter mandates currently advancing in five states. The association recognizes that microplastics pollution is a critical issue demanding real solutions. However, the prescriptive approach embedded in current legislation — specifically the per-washer requirement mandating individual filters on every machine sold — would create insurmountable barriers for the vended laundry industry without delivering the environmental impact legislators seek.

Progress comes through education. When legislators understand the essential service laundromats provide and the fundamental differences between commercial and residential operating environments, we’ve seen productive dialogue lead to meaningful amendments and carve-outs for commercial washers.

The Association continues monitoring and engaging with all affected states. Our industry is committed to being part of workable solutions that reduce microfiber pollution. But the current per-washer mandates, combined with provisions requiring laundromat customers to access and clean filters themselves, present compliance challenges that don’t align with operational realities. Claims that affordable filters for commercial washers are readily available simply don’t reflect the market truth.

The path forward requires collaboration between legislators, environmental advocates and industry stakeholders who understand what’s actually achievable in commercial laundry operations.
